Group Plans to Spend Six Figures in Race Against Incumbent District Attorney in Athens

A political organization is planning to spend six figures in hopes of defeating an Athens area district attorney.

Safer Georgia Inc. announced its initiative against District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez last week with the following press release:

Following Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez qualifying for re-election, Safer Georgia Inc. launched a six-figure campaign to defeat Gonzalez at the ballot box this November.

The organization’s initial ad, “Unsafe”, highlights how Gonzalez’s repeated failures and refusal to prosecute criminals has made Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties less safe.

“Deborah Gonzalez has shown our community time and time again that she is more concerned with politics than protecting our families,” said Eric Eberhardt, a local attorney and spokesperson for Safer Georgia Inc. “Her established incompetence to serve the role of District Attorney and refusal to prosecute crimes have left victims and their families helpless, put hardened criminals back on our streets, and made our community unacceptably vulnerable. Safer Georgia Inc.’s campaign is focused on holding Deborah Gonzalez accountable for her horrible prosecutorial record and ensuring citizens of Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties finally have a district attorney who will keep our community safe.”
