RHS Wrestling Celebrates Seniors During Red and Gold Exhibition

Rome High School’s wrestling team hosted visitors last weekend in celebration of their seniors.

During the team’s Red and Gold wrestling exhibition, friends and family got a look at RHS wrestlers in action as they faced off in the high school’s main gymnasium. Each weight class had the opportunity to workout against their teammates in preparation for the last half of the season. Because of COVID -19 challenges, it has been difficult for the Wolves to attend scheduled meets. According to head coach Juan Pickett, just getting time on the mat is helpful as his athletes prepare for the area and state tournaments.

“This year has been a great learning experience for our team,” Pickett said. “Our wrestlers have put more into this program than a coach could ask for. Our group works hard every day and they have grown not only in their sport, but they have formed a strong bond as a team.”

Rome’s head wrestling coach also expressed his appreciation for his seniors. He was especially thankful for the opportunity to coach Bryant Wilkinson, an athlete who has spent time on the mat since his elementary years. Wilkinson is also the 2020 State Champion in the Class 5A, 195-pound weight class and he is looking to repeat in 2021 in Class 6A.

“We have been limited,” said Pickett,” and we have had around eight matches. Not every wrestler was able to compete during those events, but we are still hopeful about our chances at state. Our goal is to have all our team qualify for state and bring home the titles. We are now making a big push to get them ready for that high level of competition.”

This year, the area and state tournament will run a bit differently due to CDC guidelines. For Class 6A, the area tournament will be held on Feb. 6 at Alexander High School. The GHSA State Wrestling Tournament for Class 6A will return to the Macon Centreplex 200 Coliseum Drive Macon, Ga 31217 on Thursday, Feb. 11. Tickets will be available using a GoFan link and seating is limited. CDC guidelines will be strictly enforced.
