Frederick Lamont Jones is back in custody after spending three days as a fugitive. Authorities confirmed Jones’ arrest on Wednesday morning, saying he was taken into custody just before midnight.
The Screven County Sheriff’s Office said Bulloch County deputies, the Sylvania Police Department, and the Hiltonia Police Department assisted in executing a search warrant in Screven County after a tip from a citizen.
Jones escaped Saturday night in what the Screven County Sheriff’s Office says was a “moment of inattention on the part of the jail staff.” He was spotted not far away on Sunday around lunch, still wearing his orange jail clothing and on Monday, the SCSO said Jones’ escape was not planned.
Jones was being held at the Screven County jail on charges of aggravated assault and armed robbery. He is the man charged with the 2019 violent attack of Sylvania PoJo’s gas station clerk where he beat a female clerk in her 60s with a baseball bat. He was on probation at the time of that attack.
A $1,000 reward had been offered for information leading to his arrest and the Sheriff’s Office vowed to arrest anyone who assisted or aided Jones during the time he was on the run. A number of agencies assisted in the search over the last few days in addition to those mentioned above, including the Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
