Students representing Harris County High School’s (HCHS) Construction program recently qualified for the state championships by placing at the Skills Challenges event hosted by Associated General Contractors of Georgia, Inc. (AGC) Workforce Development Alliances.
For the 2020-2021 academic year, the HCHS project finished the regional competitions with one third place and four first place finishes, all which qualify for the state finals happening in mid-March. Those regional results include:
1st place:
Plumbing – Hunter Anderson
Electrical Wiring – Brandon Webb
Masonry – Grace Senette
Carpentry – Michael Watley
3rd place:
Job Interview – Taylor Baker
During late October and November, Skills Challenges were hosted in seven regions around the state for students to compete in the areas of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, blueprint reading, and welding. Accompanied by HCHS construction teacher Jim Steel and metals teacher Mark Howington. All competitions this year were virtual due to COVD-19.
According to the event’s website, “Each of these events help prepare students who compete in their regional SkillsUSA events annually in January. Winners of the regional events move on to the state SkillsUSA competitions each March. Contributions from industry firms made to the AGC Georgia Foundation help make these events possible.”
