Congressman Rick W. Allen (GA-12) recently voted to pass H.R. 5, the Parents Bill of Rights Act, out of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
The Parents Bill of Rights Act would amend several existing laws to improve transparency and accountability within the public school system by guaranteeing:
1. Parents have the right to know what is being taught.
2. Parents have the right to be heard.
3. Parents have the right to see the school budget and spending.
4. Parents have the right to protect their child’s privacy; and
5. Parents have the right to be updated on any violent activity at school.
After voting, Congressman Allen made the following statement:
“Across our great nation, the parents of school-aged children are fighting to have their voices heard. Instead, they have been vilified and silenced by those who want to protect special interests over student success.
“House Republicans are working to build a future where parents’ rights are protected and families are given a seat at the table. For far too long, parents have been sidelined while their children are being taught divisive curriculum. I am proud to be an original co-sponsor on this legislation and help lead the charge on returning power to the parents – where it has always belonged.”
Having now passed through committee, H.R. 5 will go to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
