South Georgia Probate Judge Arrested for Terroristic Threats

A probate judge in one south Georgia county has been arrested on charges of making terroristic threats and violating her oath of office.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it charged Dougherty County Probate Judge Leisa Blount with one count of Terroristic Threats and one count of Violation of Oath by Public Officer on March 25 after a brief investigation. The agency was requested by Dougherty County Sheriff Kevin Sproul on March 15th after an incident report was filed on the matter.

56-year-old Blount allegedly made threats of violence against a Dougherty County employee in the presence of witnesses.

Blount turned herself into the Dougherty County jail Thursday without incident and was released on bond. The Violation of Oath charge is a felony offense with a possible sentence of one to five years in prison. The terrorist threat charge can be a misdemeanor offense or a felony, depending on the threat alleged.

The incident report from the Sheriff’s Office is not attached to the open investigation with the GBI and will be available Monday for public review, according to WALB.

The GBI says the investigation is ongoing and when complete will be turned over to the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
