A Statesboro man arrested Tuesday for alleged financial crimes in Bulloch County is also facing charges in Toombs County.
Carrol Belton Baird was arrested by the Statesboro Police Department earlier this week on warrants alleging he stole $25,000 in vehicle down payments from Vaden Nissan in Statesboro. Read more on that here.
TheGeorgiaVirtue confirmed Thursday that additional warrants were executed in Toombs County and a hold had been placed on Baird while he was at the Bulloch County Jail. Baird is accused of Deposit Account Fraud in Toombs.
According to records obtained by TheGeorgiaVirtue.com on Friday, Baird was arrested by the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office for an August 2023 incident in which Baird allegedly wrote a bad check.
From the narrative in the report by the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office:
On the above date and time Deputy Williams was dispatched to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office for a walk-in for a bad check. Deputy Williams arrived at the Sheriff’s Office and spoke to a Heather Sanford. Mrs Sanford said on Aug.19, 2023 Tray Baird borrowed money from Jimmy Sharpe in the amount of $5500.00. Mr Baird returned on Aug. 26, 2023 with a check from Portal Financial Consulting LLC DBA Nevil Tire in Statesboro GA in the amount of $5500.00. Mrs Sanford said she felt that something was wrong with that check. Mrs Sanford said she contacted the bank and found out that the checking account the checks were written on was closed. Mrs Sanford contacted Mr Baird on Aug. 31,2023 about coming by to make a payment. Mr Baird told her that he would be by the next day to make a payment and never showed. Mrs Sanford said the next contact with Mr Baird was on Dec. 1,2023. Mr Baird told Mrs Sanford that he was going to come on Dec. 9,2023 to make a payment. On Dec 9,2023 Mrs Sanford said Mr Baird never showed up to make a payment. Mrs Sanford said on Dec. 13,2023 Mr Baird was contacted by text telling him that if he didn’t come and make a payment by the time they close she will be turning it over to the authorities. Mrs Sanford said she was told to deposit the check on Dec 14,2023. Deputy Williams made copies of the papers and attached them to this report.
Baird was transported from the Bulloch County Jail to the Toombs County Jail on Wednesday.
He posted a $5,000 property bond in Toombs County. In Bulloch County, he was released on $10,000 bond.
I’m wondering why Ms. Sanford was so lenient with Mr. Baird . As soon as she found out it was a closed account she should have went with her instincts and notified authorities. She should have never allowed him so many opportunities to say he was coming in and then not show. She was a good hearted woman, and they are always the ones who get screw taken advantage of. I hope he serves his time and Ms. Sanford gets her money back
