It’s Fire Prevention Week and the Statesboro Fire Department is hoping to educate the public on the importance of smoke alarms – ultimately increasing their use!
According to the National Fire Protection Association:
- Smoke alarms were present in 74% of the reported home fires from 2018 to 2022.
- 59% of home fire deaths were caused by fires in properties with no smoke alarms (43 %) or smoke alarms that failed to operate (16%)
- The death rate per 1,000 home structure fires is approximately 60% lower in homes with working smoke alarms than in homes with no alarms or none that operated

Join us in raising awareness about fire safety and prevention. This year, we’re focusing on teaching everyone the importance of having working smoke alarms, creating a home fire escape plan, and practicing fire drills.
