The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Friday, August 7, 2020 in Screven County.
The GBI Region 5 office says it was requested at 9:20 PM by the Georgia State Patrol following the incident. The Region 5 office covers Bryan, Bulloch, Candler, Chatham, Effingham, Evans, Jenkins, Liberty, Screven, and Tattnall counties. It is led by Special Agent in Charge John Durden.
The state agency released the following statement on Saturday morning:
Preliminary information shows that a trooper attempted to stop a Nissan Sentra for a traffic related offense on Stoney Pond Road in Screven County. The car refused to stop and led the trooper on a brief chase down several county roads. The trooper initiated a Precision Intervention Technique (PIT) and the car came to a stop in the ditch. The trooper fired one round, striking Julian Edward Roosevelt Lewis, age 60. Lewis was pronounced deceased on scene. An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab.
The trooper was not injured in this incident and the investigation is ongoing.
This is the first officer-involved shooting in Screven County, which is about 56 miles northwest of Savannah, in 2020.
Once the GBI has concluded its investigation, it will turn over the findings to the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
