The Screven County School system is closing schools for in-person learning through Labor Day thanks to a spike in coronavirus cases.
The announcement was made Monday afternoon. Screven County joins Long County, Ware County, and Burke county in closing their doors in the last week due to COVID-19.
The school system reported Friday that it had 15 positive cases at Screven County Elementary, 24 at Screven County Middle School, and 28 at Screven County High School in the week beginning August 9 and ending August 13.
Beginning Thursday, August 19, students will transition to virtual learning. Schools will remain open on Tuesday, August 17 and Wednesday August 18 for parents who wish to send their children, but student absences will be excused for those who do not. Masks will be required for all staff and students on these school days.
In a letter from Superintendent James Thompson, the Digital Learning Plan was outlined for the next two and a half weeks, including provided Chromebooks and WiFi access for students in need.
