WHAT: A Ribbon Cutting for MCG Savannah at Georgia Southern University, the newest four-year campus of the Medical College of Georgia Â
WHEN:Â 11 a.m., Friday, July 26Â
WHERE:Â Georgia Southern University Armstrong Center, 13040 Abercorn St., SavannahÂ
BACKGROUND: Starting this year, 40 medical students per class will live and learn in Savannah for the entirety of their four years of medical school. While MCG has had a two-year regional clinical campus in Savannah for third- and fourth-year students since 2011, this new four-year campus, a partnership with Georgia Southern University, will broaden the impact of one of the nation’s first and largest medical schools. This campus allows MCG to grow its class size from 264 to 304 students, making it the 4th or 5th largest medical school by class size in the nation, and ultimately producing more physicians for Savannah and for Georgia. Â
OPPORTUNITIES:Â After the ceremony, there will be time to interview several VIPs, including state legislators and members of Congress, who were instrumental in securing funding for this campus; the Chancellor of the University System of Georgia; and Presidents from Augusta University (home to the Medical College of Georgia) and Georgia Southern University. MCG’s Dean, MCG Savannah’s Campus Dean and the first class of 40 students will also be on hand.
After the ribbon-cutting, there will also be tours of the administrative and classroom spaces in the Armstrong Center, as well as the Health Professions Academic Center, where the campus’ simulation center and other labs are located. Media are welcome to attend those tours.Â
