Due to severe weather and road conditions caused by Tropical Storm Debby, the Bulloch County Board of Education (Board) has canceled a property tax hearing and its scheduled regular session meeting which were both scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 8, at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively.
A called session Board meeting may be scheduled at a later date to replace the cancelled regular session. If so, proper legal notice will be given to the news media and public.
The public hearing was the first of three previously announced property tax hearings. It has been rescheduled to Thursday, August 22, at 9 a.m. The other public hearings remain as scheduled. All of the hearings will be held in the boardroom of the Board of Education’s Central Office, located at 150 Williams Road in Statesboro. A public notice has been placed at the Board of Education and in the county’s legal organ, The Statesboro Herald. It has also been shared with other news media and across the school district’s communication platforms.
On July 25, during its scheduled work session, the Board tentatively adopted a millage rate which will require an increase in property taxes by 4.95%.
All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the following dates and times:
· Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 11:30 am
· Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 6:00 pm
· Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 9:00 am
This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 7.932 mills, an increase of .374 mills. Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 7.558 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $250,000 is approximately $36.65 and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $250,000 is approximately $37.40.
The Board is scheduled to vote to set a millage rate at its August 22 work session at 6:30 p.m.
