4 Bulloch Schools on Low Performance List Triggering Voucher Eligibility

Four Bulloch County Schools appear on the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement’s Low Performing Schools list, meaning some students may be eligible for a voucher to pay for private school or homeschooling expenses.

The recently released list determines which students are eligible for the Promise Schools voucher program, which affords upwards of $6,500 to some families to pay for private school tuition, homeschool expenses, and other education expenses.

The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement defines a “low-performing school” as a school that has a College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) score that falls at or below the 25th percentile in its grade cluster (Elementary, Middle, and High School clusters).

Appearing on the 2024 list are four Bulloch County Schools including:

  • Langston Chapel Elementary School
  • Sallie Zetterower Elementary School
  • Stilson Elementary School
  • Statesboro High School

Students who are eligible must:

  • be zoned for a public school in the bottom 25% for academic achievement
  • have attended the public school for at least two consecutive semesters or entering kindergarten
  • not being receiving any other scholarship, tuition grant, or other benefit from a student scholarship organization
  • not be enrolled in a school operated by the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice
  • and the parent or parents must have been a Georgia resident for at least a year unless they are on active duty in the military

Priority goes to families earning less than four times the federal poverty level. In 2023, the Department of Health & Human Services set that number at $120,000 for a family of four.

Other schools in the region placed on the list:

  • All schools in Evans County
  • Swainsboro Elementary & Swainsboro Middle Schools
  • Jenkins County High School
  • Long County Middle School & McClelland Elementary School
  • North Tattnall Middle School and Tattnall County High School
  • Sally Dailey Meadows Elementary School (Vidalia City Schools)

Applicants wishing to apply for the program can begin in early 2025. Details will be released as the timeline for enrollment draws closer.
