Mrs. Nell Smith Mock

Nell Smith Mock, 90 of Sylvania joined her husband and loved ones in Heaven on Friday, November 24, 2023. She was born on December 23, 1932 to Virgie and Emory Smith. Nell “Gagee” was one of four siblings, all raised in Screven County. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church and Faith Sunday School Class, and had taught Sunday School and led the Women’s Missionary Union for many years. Nell married her high school sweetheart, Leonard Desmond Mock on July 20th, 1952. Together they raised a family grounded in faith and love (and a lot of laughter). Mrs. Mock graduated Screven County High School in 1949. She then attended Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro. She was first employed by the Screven – Jenkins Library. Nell found the combination of children and books irresistible. She drove the first book bookmobile with Ozzie Mobley. She went on to work for the Screven County Health Department for 30 years. Nell was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Marguerite Pye, brother, Marvin Smith, sisters-in-law, Helen Smith, and Shirley Smith, and grandson, Adam Mock. Survivors left but well prepared by Nell “Gagee” Mock include sons, Len (Jill) Mock and Lee (Carol) Mock; daughters, Lydia (Simon) Young and Lisa (Tommy) Sheppard; grandchildren, Clint (Erin) Sheppard, Jared (Jessica) Mock, Sam (Jennie) Sheppard, Wes (Barbara) Broussard, Kasey Mock Gonya, Allison (Kenneth) Woodall, and Celeste Elizabeth Sheppard , numerous great-grands; and a brother, Edwin Smith. Services will be held on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 1:00 PM in the First Baptist Church Sanctuary with Rev. Clint Sheppard officiating assisted by the Rev. Dr. Lamar Holley. The family will receive friends an hour prior in the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Screven County Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ben Sheppard, Jared Mock, Sam Sheppard, Kenneth Woodall, and Wesley Broussard. Jay Brinson, Jeff Pye, and Jeff Davis, Honorary pallbearers are the Faith Sunday School, Marsha Bradley, Relinda Walker, Renee’ Hunter, Kathy Godbee, Latrell Jenkins, Laura Mills, Louise Suggs, and Pattie Shannon. The family ask that memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church Youth Fund, P.O. Box 318, Sylvania, GA 30467.
