The following questions were answered by Nevil in a candidate questionnaire issued by the Bulloch County Republican Party
Employment/Profession: Retired Teacher
Military Service: None
Can you allocate the time to attend and actively participate in all required meetings and additional functions: Yes
Political Experience: No
Civic Involvement:
If you have yet to gain prior political experience or involvement, give your reasons for seeking this position and your qualifications for office: I feel I am knowledgeable in matters of education concerning students, parents, and teachers. I care about the people of our county and want our children to have the best education possible without potentially wasteful spending that does not directly impact students. Having been an educator for 30 years and having three children attend Bulloch County Schools, I feel I’m qualified to make sound decisions for our county.
How would you best explain the duties of the office you seek? Board members are responsible for making decisions that guarantee our children receive the best education possible in the safest schools possible.
How can you best contribute to our county and the citizens you serve? I will be a voice for the citizens by sharing their concerns and suggestions. I will not vote for unnecessary taxes, but will try to lower taxes. I will advocate for safe schools with an SRO at every school. I will also be available to listen to students, teachers, parents, and all citizens.
Are you willing to speak and communicate with the citizens that you serve? Absolutely.
What are your biggest concerns for the County and the citizens you are running to represent? I’m concerned that uncontrolled growth in Bulloch County will lead to overcrowded schools. Our school system was once considered the best and I want us to be the best again. We must plan for growth in a reasonable way to ensure our children always come first. At the same time, we have to develop a budget that covers our needs without overspending.
What changes or improvements would you like to see made in Bulloch County? I would like to look at the possibility of adding another high school to our county in order to keep the size of our current high schools at the optimal size for learning. I would like to see a STEM program in each school, and a greater focus on different types of learning to maximize the benefits for each child.
What would you like to see continue in Bulloch County? We have great teachers in Bulloch County that care about the students. I would like to continue to encourage qualified and experienced teachers to come to our county by looking at what benefits would keep them here until retirement.
How would you balance the interests of the taxpayers with the needs of the citizens? Having a balanced budget and spending within the limit of allotted funds would balance the needs of everyone. There should not be the mentality that more funds can be acquired by raising taxes.
I would like to add… I have spent over half my life looking out for the interests of children. As a teacher, I have always fought for my students and their needs over the wants of those in other positions if those needs were not matched. Each child deserves the right to receive a quality education that will provide them with necessary life skills. I intend to continue to fight for that right.
Nevil is challenging incumbent Heather Mims for the Board of Education seat. Mims was offered an interview, but declined to participate.
