The Evans County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are investigating a fatal boating accident.
The ECSO said Friday that deputies along with Evans County Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a boating accident on the Canoochee River.
“On Thursday, April 8, 2021, at approximately 6:45 pm, the Evans County Sheriff’s Office and Evans County Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a boating accident on the Canoochee River near the Rocks River Landing.
Upon arrival, public safety learned that a boat with three fishermen had overturned just east of the landing with two of the three fishermen being accounted for.
The Evans County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources who responded to the scene with a boat and equipment. Law enforcement and Fire Rescue personnel then began a search of the river.
At approximately 8:06 pm, members of Evans County Fire and Rescue located the body of the third fisherman near where the boat had overturned. The deceased fisherman was identified as 61-year-old Hiram Moody of Evans County. The Evans County Coroner responded to the scene where Mr. Moody was pronounced dead.
The joint investigation by the Evans County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is still ongoing.
