GBI Investigates Inmate Death in Chatham County

This is a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at about 10:40 p.m., the GBI was requested by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office in reference to an unresponsive inmate.

Preliminary information indicates that on June 25, 2024, at about 6:10 p.m., a man arrived at the Chatham County Jail following an arrest by the Savannah Police Department. He was evaluated by medical staff at the jail and was referred to the hospital for medical clearance.

Once released from the hospital, he was taken back to the jail and later found unresponsive in his cell. He was taken back to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The identity of the inmate is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The inmate’s body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler, Georgia for an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
