After expedited work by the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT), all Interstate 16 lanes are open near the Chatham Parkway overpass as of 11:25 a.m. Saturday.
Westbound lanes closed Thursday afternoon after a commercial vehicle transporting an excavator struck the bridge. Georgia DOT teams made quick work of the damaged Chatham Parkway bridge beam removal process.
Chatham Parkway’s reopening above the interstate is ongoing with barrier wall placement and lane restriping for a temporary one lane in each direction configuration. Georgia DOT expects traffic to return to the overpass route by Saturday afternoon.
Overall, four total bridge beams and portions of the Chatham Parkway bridge deck will need future replacement and that timeline is not yet known. Georgia DOT and contract partners will determine the bridge related construction path in the coming months.
Be sure to check Georgia DOT social channels and 511GA.org for the latest information.
