Former School Resource Officer Arrested by GBI

A former School Resource Officer was arrested Wednesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The GBI said Thursday that they arrested and charged former Habersham County School Resource Officer David Matthew Jackels, age 47, of Cornelia, Georgia, with Violation of Oath of Office by a Public Officer and False Statements on October 9.

A little more than seven months ago, Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation into allegations surrounding Jackels interaction with students. As a result of the investigation that began on February 29, 2024, Jackels was arrested.

Jackels was booked into the Habersham County Detention Center.

NowHabersham reported that Jackels had been fired after it was discovered that he had been messaging a student at the middle school to which he was assigned. The news outlet also said that Jackels has worked in law enforcement for 25 years.

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney for prosecution.
