The 25th Anniversary running of the Motul Petit Le Mans is set to take place today, at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. The 10 hour endurance race at the Braselton, Georgia road course marks the final race in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar championship for 2022.
The championship contending #60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura DPI surprised many on Friday after taking pole position with a 1:08.555 lap of the 2.54 10 turn North Georgia Racing Circuit. The Chip Ganassi run #02 Cadillac claimed second position overall. The DPI championship leading #10 Wayne Taylor run Acura claimed 3rd. The #10 Acura was widely considered to be the favorite to take pole position but a spin in the final moments of the prototype qualifying session dashed those hopes.
The #11 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca 07 claimed pole in LMP2, while the #74 Riley Motorsports Liger won pole in the LMP3 class. In GT Daytona Pro the #14 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus RC F set the class benchmark. While the #1 BMW of Paul Miller Racing set the mark for the Pro-Am GT Daytona Class.
DPI era ends with Petit Le Mans
Today’s race marks the end of the Daytona Prototype International era in IMSA WeatherTech competition. First debuting in 2017 the wildly successful class is set to be replaced by the IMSA GTP class which will feature the all new Le Mans Daytona Hybrid cars, and Hypercars that currently race in the FIA/ACO World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
