State Representative Mack Jackson, a Democrat lawmaker from Sandersville, recently joined Governor Brian Kemp in Athens as House Bill 82 was signed into law.
Sponsored by Rep. Jackson, this legislation introduces a new tax credit of up to $5,000 for rural healthcare professionals, including physicians and dentists in rural counties, for up to five years of continuous practice.
HB 82 amends tax credit eligibility for rural physicians, restricting it to those who qualify by May 15, 2024, and ending the credit on December 31, 2029.
Those in rural counties before May 15, 2023, need three years of non-rural practice to qualify for the new tax credit of up to $5,000. Prorated credits are available for partial first-year qualifications, capped at $2 million annually.
“I’m thrilled to see House Bill 82 signed into law,” said Rep. Jackson. “This is a transformative moment for rural communities, ensuring better access to essential healthcare services. Having represented and lived in rural Georgia, I’ve witnessed the pressing need for greater healthcare resources. This legislation is our response to these needs, guaranteeing that no Georgian is at a disadvantage because of where they live. I’m grateful for the support of my colleagues, including Representatives Al Williams (D-Midway), Lee Hawkins (R-Gainesville), Sharon Cooper (R-Marietta), Patty Marie Stinson (D-Butler), James Beverly (D-Macon) and Senator Max Burns (R-Sylvania), for turning this bill from an idea into reality.”
