GBI Investigates Shooting Death Involving Off-Duty Atlanta Police Officer

At the request of the City of South Fulton Police Department, GBI agents are investigating the death of Devon Anderson, age 38.

The investigation shows on August 5, 2024, at about 1:00 a.m., Melvin Potter, an off-duty Atlanta Police Department officer, was at a bar with two other people at the 5000 block of Old National Highway in College Park, GA. As Potter was leaving the bar, he was escorting someone to their car when an argument occurred between him and another group of people. Later, the incident escalated, and Potter ended up shooting and killing Anderson.

Anderson was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. Anderson’s body was taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed.

The City of South Fulton Police Department arrested and charged Potter with Obstruction.
