Amid an ongoing investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and financial turmoil within the Long County government, TheGeorgiaVirtue.com requested the credit card statements for the county. An analysis as well as the raw data is below.
Facts about the credit card statements:
- The line of credit/account for Long County with Bank of America has a $550,000 limit
- The county has paid off the statement in full every month, accumulating only $12 in interest in 2024.
- On that line of credit, there are 28 credit cards for various departments within Long County, the Sheriff’s Office, and other constitutional officers
- Each credit card has a unique last 4-digit number, but credit cards are often shared with entire departments instead of solely with the person who was assigned to use the card.
- There is no master list with all of the credit card users. The County Clerk’s Office has no record for any of the Sheriff’s Office users
A few things to consider when looking at the data below:
- The categories were determined in an effort to best provide an overall picture of the TYPE of spending on the county credit cards.
- The placement of a charge in a particular category does not necessarily mean a charge was legitimate or illegitimate.
- For example: Charges listed in the Amazon or Walmart categories may be ‘office supplies’ or ‘equipment,’ but without receipts cannot be verified as such. For that reason, those expenditures are in their own category until specifics can be determined.
- Another example: A charge for blue police lights in the ‘equipment’ category purchased on a card held by a county commissioner does not necessarily mean that charge was a legitimate, approved expense.
- ‘Notable Charges’ below were decided at the discretion of the author. The list is not all inclusive. All charges, however, are listed out on the detailed expense sheet for each respective card.
