Melissa Calhoun Qualifies for Effingham County State Court Judge

Melissa Calhoun has qualified to run for State Court Judge in Effingham County. She filed her paperwork with the Board of Elections on Monday.

Calhoun previously served as one of the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit’s juvenile court judges. She resigned in December and was appointed on December 31, 2023 to serve as the Acting Solicitor General of Effingham County after Rick Rafter left mid-term. Her appointment was superseded by the appointment of Spencer Tyson by Governor Kemp just two weeks ago.

The incumbent is currently Stephen Yekel and he is expected to seek a full term after being appointed following the departure of Judge Ronnie Thompson, who is now a Superior Court Judge. It is also expected that former Rincon City Attorney Raymond Dickey will enter the race.

Qualifying will continue this week through Friday at 12:00 p.m.

The last day to register to vote in the primary election is April 22, 2024.
Early voting for the Primary Election begins April 29.
Election Day is May 21, 2024.
